These Lost Lands.jpg
Oil on Canvas, 60 X 45 cm

Ancient myths from all across the world tell the unifying story of a great human civilization destroyed by flood and fire.
Collecting on the knowledge of the past, today consensus holds that when the Earth was gradually emerging from the last Ice Age just after 11,000 BC, a comet hit the Earth.
The blazing asteroid tore through the firmament and exploded with the force of ‘several thousand nuclear bombs bursting simultaneously’. The catastrophic impact of the asteroid caused a rapid rise in sea levels that consumed and obliterated from the historical record enormous areas of land and civilization that had previously been above water.

Engulfed in the great wave of time, thriving metropolises such as the Lord Krishna’s Lost City – Dwaraka written of in the Hindu holy book the Mahābhārata, to the great underwater Pyramid of Yonaguni Jima – Japan were places that existed only within the geography of imagination becoming the legendary lands of mythology.
Their incredible discoveries in recent times has lifted these Lost Lands out of majestic loneliness and returned them to humanities greater understanding.

These Lost Lands is a painting that was created out of a desire to visualise in some way what I imagine to be a deep and dazzling interiority of a yet unnamed world of pre-history.
