The Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) was a secret revolutionary fraternity founded in the mid-19th century. They were also known as the 'Fenians', and this group planned the rebellion known as the Easter Rising of 1916. The painting offers a reflection on the messianic and pagan tradations that influenced the contested writings of Pádraic Pearse who was made President of the short lived Republic. He was excuted on the 3rd of May 1916.  “there are many things worse than bloodshed, and slavery is one of them.” Pádraic Pearse.
